How many Indians & The countdown begins

How many Indians does it take? Take to do what you may ask… anything… how many does it take to do anything you can think of? I’m sitting in my office and watching one Indian repairing or, should I say, attempting to repair one of our broken air conditioners and there are four others just hanging around watching him. Earlier I was on the turbine witnessing the bolt stretching on the coupling. There were a half dozen involved in the actual job but another six or eight were packed into the load compartment just watching what was going on. How frustrating sometimes to get through them just to do my job. A more positive aspect was watching the workers pour a concrete slab. Rather than hire a pumper, one person, maybe two that run concrete from the truck to the slab, they had dozens of people carrying trays of concrete and dumping them meticulously in the form while others worked it into where it needed to be. This was quite an amazing feat as they, over the course of the day and well into the evening, moved yard after yard of concrete to fabricate the slabs. This provided a days wages for at least 50 people that maybe wouldn’t have had a job otherwise. They seem to build roads the same way around here, using people manually spreading different layers of rock, pebbles, clay, sand and other materials rather than having it done by machine. Sometimes, just sometimes, in some places maybe modern equipment isn’t there for a reason other than it can’t be there. Maybe someone thinks it’s good to hire the people, provide employment and take a little longer to do the project…

Ah yes, looks like I can start a countdown of sorts for my departure. November 4th is the beginning of my scheduled R&R for this job and that's the date my manager says he's looking to replace me on this assignment since I don't intend to work into December and the need for a mechanical field engineer on this job will likely go thru January. Sooo, let's see today is October 4th so I have 30 days left before my scheduled departure date. Of course, I know how difficult it is to get people here so I anticipate it may take a little longer. I'll adjust the date once I find out who is coming and their anticipated arrival date... but for now, 30 day's and counting.
